![]() ![]() Since 5 Original Album "Riot" sounds so different than Complete (Super Bit Mapping) and Best (original McMaster), perhaps it's the RVG version? Many RVG's have a collapsed, rather than widened, sound stage, though, so that seems odd. McMastering (80's, early 90's)Ĭomplete Blue Note 60's Sessions: re-issued 20-Bit SBM mastering by Ron McMaster (mid 90's "Collector's Choice")Įmpyrean Isles: RVG Editions, Van Gelder remasters (late 90's/2000's) versions at your fingertips.īest of Blue Note Years: Original U.S. So you seem to have examples from all the available U.S. If I'm not mistaken, your Empyrean Isles from 1999 (or 1998) is the Rudy van Gelder remaster. I'd be interested in a comparison between any other tracks the Best Of has in common with the other releases, particularly the 5 Original Albums, to see if what you found with Riot is duplicated throughout. The Best of Blue Note years was released in 1988, so it would have the original McMaster transfers from the original CD pressings. So, what gives? Were there different mixes of some of the Blue Note albums? Or was the remastering particularly aggressive for some of the releases? What can account for the dramatic sound differences?Īlso, which of the masterings is generally considered the "best"? I'd like to eliminate some of the duplication from my hard drive (where I listen to all my music). Some of the songs on 5 Original Albums sound like different mixes from the other releases for example, "Riot" has wider stereo in the 5 Original Albums set than on either Complete Blue Note 60s Sessions or Best of the Blue Note Years. The individual Empyrean Isles CD sounds very muffled compared to everything else, almost as if it is a different mix. The Complete Blue Note 60s Sessions sound brighter and louder than the others (and have lower DR scores, with the exception of the Takin' Off/Maiden Voyage CD, which is even louder. My observations after listening to each CD: ![]() ![]() I have bought the following Blue Note CDs:ġ) 5 Original Albums (Takin' Off, My Point of View, Inventions and Dimensions, Speak Like a Child, The Prisoner)Ģ) Complete Blue Note 60s Sessions (Takin' Off, My Point of View, Inventions and Dimensions, Empyrean Isles, Maiden Voyage, Speak Like a Child, The Prisoner)Ĥ) Classic Albums: Takin' Off / Maiden Voyage (2013, I think) Maybe this sheds some light on the collection, but I thought you might find it interesting either way, so I'll paste them below: But worth mentioning too that for MAIDEN the Analogue Productions hybrid SACD (mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray) is also quite good - I prefer it by a little to the way MAIDEN sounds on the Bluray.ĭr, J, I was able to find an Italian website that provides some information on the mastering/remastering used for some of the tracks for the "5 Original Albums." Some give dates of the remaster used, and some do not. Blue Notes can be hard to find these days - but if you are patient you'll see them occasionally in used bins and online for cheap.įor EMPYREAN and MAIDEN the Bluray is quite good, so you are probably set there. McMasters - the ones that have a silver disc with blue Blue Note logo painted on - not the later "Collector's Choice" repressings of these where the background of the disc surface is painted white - and also those repressings have later (1990s) copyright dates on the face of the disc (but, confusingly, NOT on the tray cards - they used the original tray cards with the earlier copyright dates, so you can't tell whether its an original or a repress unless you see the actual disc). I don't know about the mastering/sonics for the 5 ORIGINALS set, unfortunately.ĬOMPLETE is good sounding - so if you find it for a good price, a very solid way to go and you get a nice booklet with photos and a couple of rarities (not essential but nice).īut for me the best sounding CD versions of each Hancock BN album you don't already have - TAKIN' OFF, MY POINT OF VIEW, INVENTIONS AND DIMENSIONS, SPEAK LIKE A CHILD, and THE PRISONER - are the original U.S. ![]()
